I have been researching my family tree for a year now and am still stuck with my grandmothers family, who were boat people, and wondered if there may be anyone who could help.
My grandmother was Harriet Jones, born 7/03/1909 at The Bridge - Brewood. Her birth certificate states her father as Thomas Jones and mother Mary Ann Smith. I have a marriage certificate for Thomas Jones & Mary Ann Smith, married 06/07/1890 at St Thomas, Kidsgrove, Staffs. Thomas Jones was 21 at the time, occupation boatman, HardingsWood. Father John Jones, boatman. Mary Ann Smith was 19, Hardings Wood. Father Thomas Smith, Boatman. I know that Hardings Wood is on the Trent & Mersey Canal, so they must have worked that area. They had other children before my grandmother, dates unknown but names George, Thomas, Mary Hannah, Arthur and Selena. Arthur was killed in the locks, crushed by the gates. This must have been when he was older as my Aunty remembers him being married and living with his wife at my grandmothers in Tipton once they came off the boats. Thomas settled in Stourport, and used to operate the steamer on the River Severn to Worcester. George settled in Braunston!
, and Selena in Southall/London.
If any of these names are familiar to anyone, I would appreciate any info or help you can give.
Regards,
Heidi
