Eveline - What location are you looking into? I have collected several coal
canal workers' names from the 1881 British Census and found a Clark who may
or may not be related.

William CLARK Head M 40 Calne, Wiltshire Boatman & Lab With Coal
Sarah CLARK Wife M 40 Bremhill, Wiltshire
The Clarks dwelled on Back Street in Calne and were neighbors of Robert Silk
(b.1858), 7 doors down. Robert and his father, James (my ancestor) were
boatmen.

1881 British Census at Vessel "Express" Kennet & Avon Canal Raby Wharf &
Batha[mpton], Bathwick, Somerset, England
James Silk Head M 54 Calne, Wiltshire Boatman in charge
Robert Silk Other M 25 Calne, Wiltshire Boatman
Their families resided in Calne.
