KILLED at the DERBEC
Frank Sacks, a native of this county, aged 31 years and married, met with
a fatal accident about four o'clock Friday afternoon at the Derbec drift
mine where he was employed as carman. He was running a loaded train of
several cars down the grade of the tunnel from the breast to the shaft,
and
as it is customary stood on the rear of the last car wehre he could control
the brake. A car broke away from another train that was behind him and
came at lightening speed for a distance of a thousand feet. He could hear
it because of the noise his own train made. When it reached him he was
as a
consequence caught between it and the car on which he rode. The calf of
one of his legs was frightfuly crushed. He showed no other wounds when
taken to the surface, but evidently receied internal injuries as he died
at two
o'clock Saturday morning. The funeral will probably take place Sunday,
the body being buried at Cherokee. Mrs. Robert Hill of this city is a siter
to the deceased, and his two children by his first wife live here.
