The SA CA History Room hours currently:
2 to 6 PM, M-Sat

The library at CSUF does have a great collection of newspapers including the
Saramento Bee from the 1850s. No charge to use, except for copy card and
parking.

Thanks for the information, Diane.

It looks like the Santa Ana library is even less user-friendly than it used
to be back in the days when I haunted libraries doing research for
my local history articles for Orange Coast magazine. As I recall, the
California Room has different hours from the rest of the library, and
though this may have changed, probably anybody planning to visit it should
call ahead.

I found the librarians at the Anaheim library exceptionally easy to work
with, though the local history room may have changed a lot. Just
about the time I left Orange County, the library was undergoing some budget
problems and the staff in the local history room all seemed to be
going somewhere else.

California State University at Fullerton is a good resource also and as I've
said before I liked the Huntington Beach library. (oh man, it has
been so long I am sitting here thinking, "Gee, is that the right name for
the library?")

Some of the smaller libraries can be very friendly and helpful, for example
(as I recall--youngheimer's is getting to me) the one in Costa
Mesa and Orange.

Now that there are inexpensive ways to publish, I am thinking of putting my
Orange Coast articles together into an Orange County local history
book.
