Looking at my online sources I believe William had a son Gary William Geverink, born 1947.
Using Google Advanced Seach for "Gary Geverink" you will find he is a member of the USS Ranger Museum Foundation. You could write him a letter, in care (c/o) of the Museum address and ask him for the information you are seeking.

The U.S. Social Security Death Index has William's death date as Feb. 15, 1976 and his last address was in Cottage Grove, Lane Co. Oregon. Both the California Death Index and Social Security Index have the same Social Security number so it is the same man. He may be have been traveling in CA (visiting relatives for Christmas) and died. So his body could have been sent back to be buried in a cemetry in Lane Co. Oregon.
