Hello All.
I am so thrilled to have accidently stumbled across this mailing forum of
Cape Fear Scots. You'll never guess what scottish family with which I've
descended? You guessed it, I'm another Campbell.
Having never been to NC, my sister and I plan on visiting this July after
finding out recently that our ancestors settled in the Cape Fear area around
Buie's Creek (Harnett Co, previously Cumberland Co.) in the mid 1700s.
I'm wondering if anyone has come across an Archibald Campbell (born in
Scotland abt 1696), married to Mary (maiden name unknown) with children Edward (born
in Scotland abt 1746), Alexander, and Katherine...
I've been told this family arrived in NC around the 1750's, but have been
unable to locate ship records to confirm. I haven't yet determined where they
originated specifically in Scotland. Was just told Argyll.
I've been told that Archibald and Mary's son Edward sold some property on
Buie's Creek around 1805 before moving to the Leipers Fork area of Tennesse. It
may be a bad assumption on my part, but I'm thinking maybe Archibald and Mary
were buried around the Buie's Creek/Cape Fear River area. Archibald died in
1763. I would love to be able to locate a gravesite for Archibald and Mary,
however I'm sure many people during that time were buried on their land and not
necessarily in cemetaries. I've found where many Campbell's were buried at
the Flat Branch Presbyterian Church cemetary. With all the Campbell's in the
area, no doubt many were brothers, uncles, etc. I'm just taking a chance that
someone has heard of this Archibald line (Archibald/Mary, Edward/Mary,
Alexander/Nancy Gee, Edward/Sarah Wood...)
I'm also hoping someone might be able to suggest places in this region of NC
that my sister and I can research our family history and absorb the history of
the scots migration to this area. I can't wait for our trip.
Thank you to whomever read through this entire message. Looking back, it's
somewhat lengthy.
Melanie Campbell
