Hello Sarah
Is it possible that he may have changed his name to a more English name or the English interpretation of perhaps his Gaelic name? Just a thought?

Subject: [CAPE-FEAR-SCOTS] Archibald McFiggan from Kintyre
I am a new member of this list, and joined to see if anyone could help me
find out more about a potential relative - Archibald McFIGGAN, possibly of
Achapharick Farm in the parish of Killean in Kintyre. I believe that he
emigrated from Kintyre to the Cape Fear area in the Carolinas.
The passage below comes from a Gilchrist family site and from the research
of Bob Gilchrist; see
http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~steve/robertwg/carolina.htm<http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~steve/robertwg/carolina.htm> The passage is
taken from the McAllister letters, sent between McAllister family members in
Kintyre and in North Carolina, and now held in the State Archives in
Raleigh.
"In a letter written in October of 1771, Mr. James McAlester,
tacksman of nearby Ronachan Estate (located just south of
Balnakiel), [Argyll] inquired as follows:
'I would wish to `here in `generall how the poor people that went
from this country last year is `sattled and in `particuler
those `whos name is below as they were from near this place:...
Archibald McFIGGAN John & Malkem McIllcrist...
In a reply written late in 1772, Colonel McAlester wrote:
"You desire me in your letter to acquaint you how the people
is `settled that came over last year. They are all doing well but as
you observe they are the poorest sort that comes and no doubt meet
with some `deficulty before they can fix themselves."
He then adds:
"The McIlcrest and McFIGGAN I know and is in a good way"
I've not been able to find out anything about Archibald McFiggan after that
letter. Has anyone come across him in their research? Is there an on-line
transcription of the McAllister letters where I may look for further
mentions of him?
Thanks in advance
Sarah Galbraith
