To those of you researching the Sinclairs... when I was growing up, we
always pronounced the name Sin -'clair with the accent on the second
syllable. Only recently a lady from Scotland said they pronounced it
'Sink- ler over there with the accent on the first syllable. Just food for
thought.
My MacLeods... John & brother Alexander , both came into Wilmington ca.
1774/1775 and I've found men with this name on the early Cumberland census,
but have no idea if they are my MacLeods or not. There were so many back
then. They supposedly had their own ship and were probably doing a lot of
trading and transporting , so you would think they would be listed as
'master' on some list.. but I have never found one. They had already left
Alexander's family back in Scotland, but brought John's new wife, Jane , and
their three young kids with them to NC. Jane died, and John died at sea..
so Alex brought two old maid sisters over from Scotland to raise his
brother's three children in NC. Both aunts and all three siblings, as
adults, drifted down into Marlboro Co, SC.
Some of the land descriptions mention Richland Creek, Weirs branch, Cross
Creek, Deep Creek, a branch of & west of the upper prong of Governors Creek,
S/S of Deep River, McLendons Creek, DANIEL McLEOD (McLOUD), both planters
of Cumberland, for £20 N.C. , 100 a. on the fork of Tuckahoe & James Creeks
beg. On N/S of Tuckahoe 4 miles above the
fork, (1784) 100 a. on N/S of James Creek, incl. DANIEL McLOUD's
improvements.
JOHN McLOUD:
1.) 6-026: 4 Dec. 1772 LEVY (LEVI) PENNINGTON (PENNENTON) planter, & wife,
MARTHA (X), to JOHN McLOUD
(McLOOD), farmer, all of Cumberland, for £50 N.C., 200 a. on Richland Creek
incl. The plantation whereon
sd. PENNINGTON now lives, adj. CAMPBELL's upper line, patent to NATHAN SMITH
22 Dec. 1768.
Wit: JAMES MUSE, JOHN MARTIN. Proved by JOHN MARTIN Jan 1773.
2.) 7-400 ..6 Nov 1784..State Grant No. 80 to DUNKIN McFARLAND, 100 a. at
the mouth of Cabin Branch
on Rockfish, incl. JOHN McLEOD's improvements, crossing Cabin Branch & Great
Rockfish.
I'm not sure if these two men, JOhn MacLeod and Daniel MacLeod are related.
This is part of my problem. John, the father, supposedly died when Daniel
was a child. Then, there is 'uncle" Alexander. He probaly didn't settle
down at all in NC since his wife and family were back in Scotland.
