BARBADOS

The attached list of persons connected with Barbados in the West Indies
has been extracted from two sources:-

A History of Barbados by Ronald Tree
The Genealogist' Magazine Vol 17. No.9 of March 1974

The references to pages 494-498 are all from the Genealogist Magazine
whilst references to pages up to 100 or so are from Ronald Tree's book.

Those wishing further information might consult the following references:-
1) "The Journal of the Barbados Museum & Historical Society."
2) "The History of Barbados" by R.H.Schomburgk published 1848.
3) "The Original list of persons of Quality... & others who went from
Great Britain to the American Plantations" by J.C.Hotten (Available
in Auckland Public Library)
4) "A History of Barbados" By Ronald Tree (Available in Public
Libraries).
Useful addresses are:-
1) The Department of Archives, Black Rock St, St Michaels, Barbados.
2) The Barbados Historical Museum, Garrison St, St Michaels, Barbados.

The persons listed with the date 1722 subscribed to the production of a
map of Barbados by William MAYO whose surveys were conducted between 1717
& 1721 and which was published in 1722 and showed the position of 976
plantations with the name of the owner at the time of the survey. 611
copies of the map were subscribed to. The subscription was for Stg3.00 in
Barbados or Stg2.00 in London and this would have produced a total of Stg
1,283.
Hon. indicates a member of the Council. In transcribing the names the
distinction between "Mr." and "Esq" has been omitted. The "Esqrs" were
members of the Assembly or were Judges and entitled to use a carriage
with four horses, whilst members of the Council used six horses!!!!

This list has been compiled by members of the Genealogical Computing Group
of the NZ Society of Genealogists. 13th March 1989.
