i was returned from jamaican and i'm really glad that i made it to the
spanish town archives ....i was staying in ochi, so i took a minibus late
one morning (wasn't too bad - music sounded great and luckily, the baby in
my neighbor's lap threw up out the window & not on me)...cost $70ja for
the ride.....

went to the "new" archive building, not the one by the downtown square....
research hours are from 8am-ish to 3pm.....paid around $60-70ja for two
hours of time.....then spent the afternoon going through some of the most
amazing record books from 1890, 1891, etc...had to blow the dust of some
of them.....but you really have to know what you're looking for as
everything is organized by year and parish...

you can buy copies of birth and marriages certificates before 3pm for an
additional cost....i found my dad and grandfather on the birth registries,
but couldn't find my great-grandmother... jamaican surnames: stair (lucea,
hanover and steertown, st. ann).....but this was a good start for me :)
