Dear Davidas Mom, This started out more as a discussion of what the
policy was of the British War Department in regard to the black units of
the British West Indies Regiment. This in turn was prompted by someones
more specific personal inquiry. It was not an attempt to impugn the
quality or courage of the BWIR's Black, Colored or Asian soldiers who in
too many situations the British used but did not permit to fight,
particularly against Caucasians. Hence a lot of this ongoing argument is
sort of at cross purposes. The United States military had a different
set of policies.
In my own personal case my WWII, my uncles all US citizens were all
in the Pacific theater: my black USVI maternal uncles were combatants in
the Solomons, my white uncle was a technical specialist in New Caledonia
who never saw a shot.
