Petronella was a very common name indeed in the Netherlands in the 17th
and, especially, the 18th centuries. It is found particularly in the
southern provinces. It could be translated as the female form of
"little Peter", but was, one suspects, like so many names which have all
but disappeared today, a passing fashion. Will anyone be called Sharon
in a hundred years time?
