Yes indeed they were - up to their earlobes. from 1793 until 1798, when they
finally withdrew their bloody stump.
You might want to read <The Haitian Journal of Lieutenant Howard, York Hussars,
1796-98>, Roger Norman Buckley, ed. Knoxville, TN: University of Tennessee
Press, 1985.
And if you can get hold of <Slavery, War and Revolution The British Occupation
of Saint-Domingue 1793-1798>, by David Geggus. Oxford: Clarendon Press,
1982.... GRAB IT. It is THE comprehensive work, the bible on the British in
S-D. It's not exactly "light" reading, but is well-written and FULL of
interesting information.

: Dear Augusta,
: Thank you for the help. I am concerned more for Jamaica, it was just I had a
: relative (a 4xgreat grandfather) who was married in Port-au-Prince in 1795.
: He was Welsh and he was in the 13th Regiment of Foot, he married a
: widow.(maybe another soldier's wife??)
: Were there English Soldiers in P-a-P in a war type situation at that time?
: Regards
: Ducie.
