Hah, Jan, I'm older than you think! No, I meant to say that she was my
great-grandmother, the mother of my grandfather, William Dey Smdemore. To
be honest with you, I have no real documentary proof of this, as it's mainly
family story, which is as follows: my grandfather, William Dey Smedmore,
was illegitimate, his mother being Ann Wood, of Port Royal, where he was
born, and his father a seafaring Englishman, named William Smedmore. I'm
sure you remember my search for this elusive mariner in the Public Record
Office! Since the Ann Wood I found in the Port Royal baptismal register was
the only one, and she sort of fitted the time period, I had to go with her.
Sadly, on William's baptism in January 1837 (he was born October 1836),
there were no parents named, because he was illegitimate.

You should be able to find baptisms for those Campbells you mentioned in the
St. Mary parish records. Unfortunately, I don't have that film on loan, or
I could look up the names for you. The index is FHL film # 1291702 --
includes Baptism, marriage and burial indexes, 1752-1847. Vol. 2 of the
indexes is missing and was not filmed, but Patricia Jackson has put on her
web page where the actual indexed entries for St. Mary can be found, at
http://jamaicanfamilysearch.com/Samples/unindex.htm Anyway, you would
probably be interested in vol. 1, I imagine.

Hope that helps, Jan, from your old friend (!)

Dorothy
