There should be Libraries in Australia with a good run of Army Lists, at any
rate for the nineteenth cenury - there are in Canada, but the most complete
sets are here in England at the British Library and the PRO. They start in
1760. The 88th Foot was the Connaught Rangers, one of the elite units in
Wellington's Peninsular Army with a great reputation and I believe it was
the model for the fictional Irish Regiment in Kipling's "Kim". It was
transferred to the Irish Free State when that became independent in 1922,
most of the officers leaving but staying in the British Army. At that time a
history of the regiment was written, it was never published but exists in
typescript in the PRO somewhere in WO79, but like a careless fool I have
lost the reference. Baylis could be mentioned there. There is a certain
amount on various websites about the W.I.R., including
http://www.regiments.org/milhist/westindies/regts/wi-wir02.htm
Frank Goodwill has done a lot of excellent work on the WIR.
