Hi Jan:
Sorry not to have replied before. I've been spending most of my time at
work, when not working (!!!) going through microfilm of The Gleaner, which
is due back to the Library of Congress by March 26, and then, I'm off to
Jamaica for 3 weeks on April 2!
Yes, pre-civil registration births in Jamaica are available in the Law 6
Registers, which have also been microfilmed by the LDS. Keep in mind,
however, that these are strictly Church of England, so if the child were
baptized in the Methodist of Presbyterian denominations such baptisms will
not be among them. You need to check the Index to Law 6 Baptisms, (v. 1-3),
covering 1871 to 1877, FHL # 1291705. This is for the whole island and will
refer you to the relevant volume of Law 6 Baptisms. The point of Law 6 was
for clergy to record the names of parents of children to be baptized,
whether they were married or not, as long as this information was known.
Previously, from about the 1830s on most of the clergy did not do this if
the child was illegitimate, and you can imagine how difficult this makes
research in this time period!
I do happen to have the Law 6 index and registers on indefinite loan, but I
hesitate to offer a look up for you before I go to JA, as my time is
somewhat limited. Can you wait till I return at the end of April? BTW,
I'll be emailing you privately re some interesting stuff I found re a
connection to Henry Cerf.
All the best,
Dorothy
