Hi Augusta,
Thanks for your appreciation of the post and sharing your experience with
us.
I must say that I am very impressed with the fact that East Indian names,
Hindu and Muslim, and I am sure other Asian names share common
characteristics with African names. The common features are days of the
week, aspirational/inspirational, descriptive, and
cosmological/astrological. Most impressive however is the incorporation of
names of Gods or attributes of Gods, or in general some reference to God in
names.
I have been wondering about the effect of such names on personal behaviour.
Do such people behave in keeping with the "divine" features of their names?
Richard

Hi, Richard & list
I mostly lurk on the list & try to answer Saint-Domingue questions.
I wanted to thank you, Richard, for the post about African names. It
takes me back
33 years ago to when my husband & I were in Nigeria. We were newlyweds and
his office
manager, a very black tall elegant Chekiri man (and a chief of his local
tribe) named John
Vincent, visited us at home, along with a couple of ladies, also from his
tribe. They
made me an honorary member of their tribe and gave me a Chekiri name (I can
only spell it
phonetically-- Oreshuméyuwa - "God's gift is woman". That was a very
special gesture for
me. Just thought I'd share it with you all.
Thanks again,
Augusta Elmwood
