Tracy,
There are many general local history publications I've looked at for
St. Thomas. It really depends as to what aspect you are specifically
interested in. As to my favorite sources available online, I'd have
you look at this web site: http://www.mapesmonde.com/
Here are full text books that you can download for free. (can't beat
the price!) They are in Adobe pdf format. These are the ones
available with my comments..
Anderson, John L.; Night of the Silent Drums: A Narrative of Slave
Rebellion in the Virgin Islands 1975, Mapes Monde Editore, Rome
453pp. 1992.* Fiction novel, based on exhaustive research and
following historical characters and events of the 1733 slave revolt on
St. John, probably the single best source on this event. Mapes Monde
edition with many interesting old prints.
Westergaard, Waldemar C.; The Danish West Indies Under Company Rule
(1671-1754), With a Supplementary Chapter, (1755-1917) Macmillan Co.,
NY 349pp 1917.* This book details the early history of the DWI and
is interesting from the standpoint of what resources the author was
able to use in the Danish and various other archives.
Paiewonsky, Michael; Conquest of Eden 1493-1515: Other Voyages of
Colombus Mapes Monde Editore, Rome, Italy 176pp 1990.* Details 2nd
through 4th Colombus expeditions, quoting heavily from primary sources.
many old pictures and maps
Knox, Rev. John P.; A Historical Account Of St. Thomas, D.W. I.
Charles Scribner, NY 1852. Source written just a few years after
emancipation, not the most scholarly history, but it does give a
perspective from that time.
For books for purchase, try (I believe) St. Croix Landmarks Society. Or
try Amazon.com or ebay and search 'Virgin Islands'.
Also, I have a record of a 1 year old girl, Delfina Hueck daughter of
Maria Marcelina Martis at 14 Kronprindsens Gade in the 1855 Danish
census for St. Thomas.
Hope this helps!
