There is a story regarding a notorious Saba smuggling captain Tommy
Vanterpool with a price on his head being chased by a British revenuer
at sea.
He made a request of his first mate that he be placed in a hogshead
and dropped in the current with other barrels. He felt that he would
rather take the odds that the barrels would all wash up or be found than
by friendly mariners or fishing boats than the certainty of jail.
