Hi Karen,

I have two death certificates from St.Lucia, one dated 1880 and one dated
1890 where "complexion" is given as coloured. I also have the marriage
certificate (dated 1844) of the person who died in 1880 but there is no reference to
complexion on that.

I had assumed that the further back you go the more detail you will find as I
believe it was mandatory at one time for race to be recorded, and also
details of freedom. However, the marriage certificate of 1844 makes no reference to
complexion but the death certificate does. I'm also not sure whether there
was a difference in the way this was recorded by the Churches and by the
Government.

Please also let me know whether the information I sent on Bonnet, Parigau etc
was useful.
