Hi Art,
Don't know if this will help, but....I had several pictures of my Welsh
rellies which said for example, William (Garnant) Lewis. I inquired
quite awhile ago on one of the lists for a meaning of Garnant. Here is
what I was told:
Garnant is a place in Ammanford in CMN. Nant is a stream/brook, Gar is
a shank (the part of the leg between the ankle and knee). The next
village is Glanaman, meaning it is on the banks of the River Amman.
There are several streams running into the River Amman at Gar-nant, none
called Gar though. Maybe something to do with the physical aspects of
the village.
This surprised me since my Lewises came from Merthyr Tydfil...my
Devonalds and others from Pembs. My gggrandmother was Sarah Roberts
married to Thomas Roberts with four children, including a set of twins.
Thomas ROBERTS was b. abt. 1830, lived at Carne Mawr (moor) Llanwnda,
which is near Rhos Carne Coch, about 2 miles from Fishguard, Pembs.
#1080 Elaine.
