Dear Diana,
Thanks for the offer, but you kindly sent me details of your family last
year and I didn't notice any obvious matches. My Mary William seems not to
have had an 's' on her name - it certainly wasn't evident on the record of
her marriage to James James in 1828 nor on her maiden name recorded on the
birth certificates of 2 of her children. There is an 's' on one of them
however! When, as the widow of James James, she gives birth to an
illegitimate daughter in 1838 there is a Thomas William (no s) recorded
under the father's column. I had always taken this to be a cousin but
Pauline did point out that the name of a brother or close relative was often
used to give a child a father's name. Of course an extra difficuly is that
sometimes the person actually writing the name ends the word William with a
curl which could almost be an 's'!
Happy hunting - I read all your correspondance with interest in the hope....
Regards,
Audrey
