Subject: Marriage Indexes - ommisions from GRO registers

I was interested to read Gerry Lewis' report from " A Comedy of Errors",
and like his suggestion of a database of the original records on the
internet. There is more about the subject in the March issue of Family
Tree Magazine.
I once got hold of a birth certificate direct from a Register Office,
where I had been unable to find an entry on the fiche index at our county
record office. I have obtained copies of BMD certificates direct from
local Register Offices before, using a booklet with all the names and
addresses. I telephoned them first, to check that they did cover the
right area and their fees (usually the same as ordering direct from
Myddelton Street) and sent an sae with my cheque. You need to give as much
info as possible, and they do a search a couple of years either way
(although I think they may now be reducing the period). I think for
marriages you need to know which church it was, which makes things more
difficult.
I have hunted the indexes at Myddelton Street for one birth several times
and realising now that the problem is more commonplace than I had thought,
will be contacting the local Register Office.
Interests: Looking for birth of Ann THOMAS at Llanstephan, 1812/13 and her
marriage to Henry LAVER before 1834 (he was a merchant seaman)
