Hi Pauline
many thanks for the look-up. Since your reply I have looked at the Rock
Chapel records on the IGI but they only go up to 1837. I presume that they
would tend to baptize adults rather than infants so the entry for David
would probably be later? I do not know if the records at the CRO are later
than this?
The only bits I have on my Hughes this far back are
The marriage certificate of David Hughes and Hannah Evans at Rock Chapel on
21/5/1851. This gives his age as 21, occupation farm servant, residence as
Berthlwyd, Trelech and father as John Hughes. I know that David now a
"farmer" had a son John (my Gt Gt Grandfather) at Waunfach,Trelech on
31/12/1852.
I next meet David and his family in the 1881 census. This shows David as a
farmer of 35 acres at Velindre, Trelech. His wife has become Anna rather
than Hannah. It also shows some of their children still at home Anne (20),
James (16) and Rachel(12) -all born at Trelech. Interestingly also at the
house is their grandson David(7) born Trelech. I know that my Gt Gt
Grandfather John had a son David but he is not shown at their address at
Llangunnock on the 81. So looks like he was with his grandparents!
There is also one of those nice entries on the census for David's family
that you come across now and again which confirms that you have the right
family. There at the bottom of the entry is a Benjamin Evans, described as
father in law. A quick cross check back to David and Hannah Evan's marriage
cert shows her father as....Benjamin!
I love it when that happens!
I would buy your 1851 CD to see if David was still living with his parents
but I have a feeling that if he is a farm servant a month or so later in 51
he probably would not be living with them. If you do one for 61 I will
certainly get that one to see if David and (H)anna(H) had any more children
between John and Anne. Ha! who am I kidding I will get the 51 anyway just in
case :-)
Apologies for going on a bit but its nice to deal with a bit of solid
documentary evidence after six months of chasing the slippery Edward Daniel
Williams and his "loosely" named family across Glamorgan!

best regards
Phil Parry-Williams
