Subject: Hello ALL.....

Hello to everyone for my second email of the week !!!, After the last meeting I realise some of you enjoy learning about Wales and knowing its more than just having a surname etc.... Hopefully some of the previous emails have managed to inform you of things welsh and this email will today focus on the welsh in Argentina!!!!

Now that may surprise some of you already but there is a region of Argentina called Patagonia where way back in 28th July 1865 over 150 welshmen and women set sail looking for the 'promised land' where a new welsh colony could be set-up and our language and culture preserved which at that time was dying out in the principality to the immigration of welsh speakers to australia, canada, and the USa AND of course the influx of english workers in the coal and slate mines etc....

On reaching argentina they were dismayed to find a barron desert wasteland and had to travel 40 miles in unkown terroitroy before deciding on a place to stay!!!!! stay the y did and the colony managed to keep itself going then in 1874 the population reached 273 and by 1876 700 welsh lived and worked in a welsh community with teas shops and welsh chapels!!!!! due to the influx from further settlers from pennsylvannia in the USA!!!! Incidently the welsh did try a colony in Tennesse to escape the influx of irish and englsish workers in the New york/vermont area where most welsh had settled!!!! but the tennesse project failed!!!!

to this very day the town formed by the welsh has over 20,000 people living and working and welsh is still very prominet with kids taught at schools and the colony still holds eistffordds and concerts of course now supported with aid from the welsh council/language board etc.....

It really is fascinating stuff and if anyone would care to investigate further the best sites I found on the subject are linked below...

www.bbc.co.uk/wales/about/cag-patagonia.shtml

www.britannia.com/wales/whist32.html

The website has been revamped recently and i'm adding links every day to the site!!! theres a few good ones already and a nice welsh recipies site so i plan to try and make some welsh cakes before our next meeting at The whit e lion pub in Tulsa on June 28th always pay a visit or link the site to your favouites www.geocities.com/ok_cymru
it's actually good reading to read the guestbook and weve had many visitors from oversea including the czech republic and australia where ex-patriots have thanked us for promoting wales in Oklahoma so why not view the guestbook and have a read!!!!!!
