Pauline and Richard: I can add my hearty "AMEN" to Mal's comments! I have been unable to repost my interests lately, and in fact haven't picked up ANY of my genealogy materials (except to move them from the old house to the new one) for a variety of personal reasons, but NEVER because I'm uninterested. I start a new job week after next and I am hoping that it will allow me more free time in the evenings to go back to my searching. However, I wouldn't DREAM of dropping off the List(s) and even if I felt it a $$$ issue for me, I certainly couldn't blame that on Pauline and Richard!! When I read Darla's e-mail last night, I just sat here in disbelief. Anytime I feel I'm not getting my money's worth for something....anything....I just don't purchase that product/service again. That's our choice as consumers and she certainly has that personal choice. Hopefully she was just venting, although it's never a good idea to put thoughts like that in writing to the "masses" becau!
se if you change your mind no one forgets it! As time goes by I realize how many people seem to be LOOKING for an opportunity to be "offended" or "discriminated" against!
For my part, in the past few months I've started receiving volumes of SPAM in my e-mail that I never had before, as well as junk mail in my home post office box (for which I pay $68/year) which we got to try to weed out some of it when we moved. I now find that 1.) our local "Welcome Wagon" apparently gave our name and new address to everyone on the planet when we moved here (they got it from the real estate company) without our knowledge or permission; and 2) when I made one little inquiry online to a gardening website, they apparently decided that I wanted to receive ALL of their "free stuff".....AND they apparently gave, rented or sold our p.o. box address to others because now we're getting all kinds of junk mail from other places, too. THAT'S a good enough reason for me to pay for a List which I choose to belong to so that they WON'T give out my personal information without my permission. I've already notified the gardening company that they won't be getting any of !
my business and to get my name off their list permanently! Ancestry.com has gotten so outrageously expensive anyway (and I question the accuracy of some of it, too) that I'm very glad I didn't resubscribe to them last year as I had originally intended. I am finding there are other ways to get that same information and our local library has a new building dedicated to genealogy that I'm going to check out for the other side of my family as well.
Pauline, all I can say is, IGNORE the comments that went along with that e-mail. Onward and Upward, I say!
