Seeking help with our WILLIAMS brick wall, any helpful pointers would be
gratefully accepted.
On behalf of my husband, Glyn Evan Williams, I am trying to establish
just where in Wales his g grandfather JOHN WILLIAMS born abt 1853 came
from.
We have John's marriage to HANNAH ISAAC(s) in 1879 at Marylebone London.
The marriage certificate says that John's father was DAVID WILLIAMS,
occupation Carpenter. John states his occupation as Joiner. However, on
each census from 1881 to 1901 inclusive, John states that he was born in
Llandudno.
HANNAH and her father HENRY ISAAC, (occ. Shoe Maker) were from Pennard
in Glamorgan, Wales.
I have looked at films of the 1861 and 1871 census for Llandudno and
cannot find a David Williams with a son John. So decided to widen the
search to all of Wales, father DAVID, occupation Carpenter with a son
named JOHN age 17 on the 1871 census via Ancestry.
From this search I have found a DAVID WILLIAMS age 42 born LLangunnor,
occupation Carpenter, wife SARAH age 44, children are: John age 17,
occupation Clerk. Sarah age 14, Mary age 12, Benjamin age 10, Thomas
Jenkins age 4 and David age 1. All living at 6 Mount Pleasant, Llanelly.
In the same house are his brothers in law, THOMAS and JOHN JENKINS.
Thomas was a Quarry Proprietor and was still alive age 81 in 1881,
living with Sarah Griffiths and her husband David, again at Mount
Pleasant.
Next door are David Williams and his second wife Jane, a Milliner, with
his sons David age 11 and Benjamin age 20 who is a Railway Clerk.
I have tracked this family through David's death 17.12.1894. Probate
granted to SARAH GRIFFITHS and DAVID WILLIAMS at Carmarthen in January
1895,
to the 1891 census, all still living at Mount Pleasant. Now David's
occupation is listed as Master (stone) Quarry. Can anyone tell me what
this was?
I think my next step is to order the film of probates for Carmarthen in
1895 in the hope that this will link our John with this family.
Does anyone on this list have any other suggestions for me or can you
tell me more about the Mount Pleasant area of Llanelly and in particular
the Stone Quarry?
Is anyone else researching this family of WILLIAMS married to JENKINS
and GRIFFITHS?
We will be visiting England and Wales sometime in 2005 and would like to
have this 'brick wall' sorted before then!
Thank you for taking the time to read this.
