Hi All,

Just a note re Change of Name. I am researching Vipond's from Llanfar ar y
Bryn and else ware in Wales at least three changed their name all to
"Thomas" one in 1787 in Radnorshire the others in 1815 and abt 1852 in
Carmarthenshire

One family member was told that William Vipond changed his name to Thomas
because when he was at school he was constantly teased and called a
foreigner. Two of the above fathers first names were Thomas, the other the
latest, married a Hannah Thomas, the Children with a Thomas surname in the
1851 census and the parents still Vipond then in 1861 they are all Thomas's.

I have often wondered if the real reason for the change was that no one knew
how to spell Vipond [hence the many spelling variations] Thomas everyone
knew!!!!
