The California statewide marriage index begins with 1949 but the 1949-59
index is only in book form (one set for brides, one set for grooms) and
only a few libraries have this set. There is a set in the California
Room in the California State Library in Sacramento. This index is also
at the California State Vital Records Office in Sacramento which will do
a 10 year search and/or issue a certificate for $12.00.

The index 1960 thru 1986 is in fiche form and is available in many
libraries, as well as some historical and genealogical libraries have a
set of these years. The State does NOT plan to make later years
available in any form, but they will be available in the County
Recorder's Office where the marriage license was obtained - not where
the county where the marriage took place - unless license and marriage
were in same county.

Counties have marriage indexes since the time they began keeping
records. They will also do the 10 year search (you specify which 10
years) for $12 and if found, will issue a certificate.

It is important to remember, the record is in the county where the
license was obtained, which is not necessarily where the marriage took
place. The indexes show both places.
