Hello California Listers!

I'm in desperate need of some help. I've reached a dead end in a search for
my great-aunt Anna HILL. She was born in Peoria Illinois in or around 1874.
Both parents were deceased by 1882, she was 8 at that time, her brother
(William) was 16. He went to St. Louis Missouri but she was rumored to have
been adopted or taken in by a family named BEICH. They were said to have moved
to California between 1882 and 1900. Here she married a Rear Admiral in the
Navy and that is all I know.

Problems..
-I don't know where they really went in Calif.
-Don't know any names for sure other than Anna HILL
-No sign of her in Illinois after 1882

Question...
Where should I begin, California is a big state?
Any suggestions?
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for all your help.
