Chris,

I was pretty much in the same dang boat when I started researching my family! My Grandmother has Alzheimer, she doesn't remember me now! And she has all the records. I Started my research on my Grandfather, from what I knew and what my mother and Aunt remembered. Unfortunatley, they had some right and others wrong, and it made searching hard. It would have been nice if the one with the records, could have helped, but was not possible. It does not stop searching!!! At that point, 9 months later, I found him finally!
It can be hard and time consuming, but not impossible!!!!!!!!!

Grace,

My grandfather was the informant on his mother's death certificate, he knew
nothing beyond her date of birth and state of birth - thanks grandpa -
makes searching difficult.

My husband put together the obit for his own mother - he moved at least 2
of his brothers - i.e., got the towns wrong ......

Stress happens .... I keep saying that I will pre-write my own obit and
have it where the family knows where it is.

My own mother has complained about some of the obits in her town, I've
asked her to get the newspapers form and pre-fill out the information on
her interests, clubs, and volunteer work.

The data on a death certificate or an obit is only as good as the informant
.... and they are often too stressed to think clearly .... and those of us
searching behind them had to deal with their confusion.

While I research death certificates, I often listen to young folks filling
out their marriage applications. You would be surprised at the number of
them making cell phone calls home to Mom to ask her for the correct
information. Imagine searching after those that didn't phone home.
