Did the 1930 census give an initial for his wife? Did he have a wife on the 1920 census? If so you could go to http://vitals.rootsweb.com/ca/death/search.cgi and search on the last name of Stannard. I did a quick look just on Stannard and saw three ladies who passed away in Contra Constra. Perhaps one of them was his wife? It might be worth a try.
