Hello list,

I recently mailed this query to John L. Carpenter of NH who has the
excellent Carpenter FTM web site. Since he didn't answer me within 2 hours,
I decided I just couldn't wait :)

I scrolled down until I got to #229 Thomas "Jack" Carpenter of Nash Co NC.
He states that Thomas had
a son Benjamin Carpenter (born ca 1772 Nash Co NC). This Benjamin is called
both VIII and XVIII in the numbering scheme. John has no further information
listed for this Benjamin.

Could my Benjamin CARPENTER (below) be Benjamin, son of Thomas? I received a
lot of this information from the author Terry Carpenter, whom John quotes in
some of his pages. Terry got some of his info from Ruth Shirley.

There are other Benjamin Carpenters in his research, but none matches as
closely as Thomas' son Benjamin to my Benjamin. Plus, from research into my
ST. CLAIR line, Jean Grigsby states that my Benjamin may have been born in
NC, and definitely lived in SC before moving to AL, disappearing from
records after an 1836 land sale. My Benjamin was not mentioned in the 1840
census, and wife Millie was living with dtr Nancy and son Holley in the 1850
census. Nash Co NC was in the route that the MABRY family of VA took from
Surry Co VA to Union Co SC. #3 Sampson Carpenter married Nancy MAYBERRY. She
has not been proven to be of the Mabry line, but more than likely is. There
were many Mabrys in Coffee Co AL. There are Carpenters of my extended line
from AL in Van Zandt/Smith/Wood Cos TX and Mabrys from AL in Van Zandt/Wood
Cos and Titus/Franklin Cos TX, which are very near one another.

Benjamin Carpenter (born ca 1770-80, died ca 1836-1840 Dale Co. AL#).
According to oral tradition in one branch of descendants, his name was
Samson (perhaps Samson was his middle name?). Benjamin Carpenter married
ca 1806 to Milly --?--. They resided in SC ca 1808-1816, in Dale Co. AL
in 1830, and bought land on 5 Jan 1836 in Dale Co. AL. Milly and
children resided in Dale Co. AL in 1840 and in Coffee Co. AL in 1850.#
1. William Bailey Carpenter (born ca 1808 SC or Burke Co. GA, died 30
Oct 1883 AL) married ca 1832 to Rebecca Savannah (appears to be
?Susannah? in some census records) Donaldson (born ca 1815 SC, died Apr
1884 AL). William bought land in Covington Co. AL on 29 Aug 1833,
resided in Coffee Co. in 1850, in Covington Co. in 1860, and his widow
resided in Geneva Co. AL in the 1890s.
