Martha,

I'm a teacher for 17 more school days, so I get to say it. There's no such
thing as a dumb question. (Of course, there is, but normally that is a
question that was just asked and you were sitting in the back of the room
chatting with your friends and not listening.)

I have been introduced to someone and told he is from Chicago, and asked if
he knew my cousins, and it turned out he was a middle school teacher of one
of the cousins. Etc. It seems to me that genealogy is especially this
way. We have an idea, and we share it, and we see what people say. Now,
Karen Carpenter is my daughter. We named her Karen because we couldn't
think of a single bad thing that could come down on her for that name
choice. Within a year, "the other" Karen Carpenter, Richard's sister,
became famous. Of course, she died as a result of her eating disorder, so
my poor daughter went off to the University and had to listen to it all.
"Hi. This is my friend, Karen Carpenter." "Oh, hi, Karen. Have you had
lunch yet? Could I get you something to eat?" "Gee, Karen, I thought you
were dead!" Etc. The month after she graduated, she married a Hayes. Who
would have thought a person would be desperate to change their name from
Carpenter??
