Debbie,
Giles CARPENTER was born about 1834, probably in Madison Co., NY, to John
CARPENTER, b. 1797 in VT and his wife, Mary O'CONNOR. When in his early
20s, Giles went to Oshkosh, WI, where, aided by his younger brother, Samuel
D. CARPENTER, he learned the river trade on the Fox and Wolf Rivers. Once
he had experience, Giles plied the Wolf and Mississippi Rivers. Samuel
went back to NY, where he enlisted in the NY 157th Volunteers, and entered
the Civil War, where he was wounded in two different battles. Giles was in
the Navy, and was killed in fighting in Arkansas. I don't know his wife,
or if they had any children. I do have a name: Mary Carpenter
Englebright, of Oshkosh, WI. Actually, her name is given as Mary Carpenter
in one document, and Mary Englebright in another, so I'm not sure which
CARPENTER she is. She could be the wife of Giles, or his niece, Mary J.
CARPENTER, who marrie a LaRue, and was known as Babe LaRue.
There are John CARPENTERs in my family, and perhaps a Thomas or two, but
your guy isn't familiar to me. Giles was killed in action in 1862.
Perhaps he had a son named John Thomas. Do you have dates for him?
George
