Edward William Day

Edward William Day of Woodland died Dec. 7, 2001. He was 71.

Born on Jan. 11, 1930, in Sacramento, Day was known as "The Red-Headed Football Fury" at Sacramento High School, where he excelled in track and field and football.

He and his wife, Barbara, married in 1949, and he joined the U.S. Navy two years later. The couple lived in Alaska for 18 months and returned to Woodland in 1956, when Day left the military and became a fertilizer salesman - and later was promoted to sales manager. Day retired in 1992 and spent his time volunteering in Woodland.

He was chairman of the Yolo County March of Dimes; president for the Care Car Senior Center; a Housing Authority board member for 30 years; Yolo County Fair board member for 22 years, seven as president; Elks Lodge ruler; and the Elks Lodge Santa Claus for 30 years. He also was a golfer, coached his daughter's powder puff baseball team and was a Woodland Joint Unified School District crossing guard at Prairie Elementary School.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years; two daughters and one son-in-law, Patti and John Greene of Anderson, and Susan Day of Woodland; and grandchildren Danny Carter of Montana, Kerri Carter of Oregon, Jeffrey Croy of Sacramento and Brian Croy of Woodland.

A service will begin at 11 a.m. Friday at McNary's Chapel in Woodland.

Contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.
