KILLED AT A QUARRY

A Sacramento Convict's Violent Death at the Folsom Prison

E.W. STARTSMAN, the elderly man who was convicted of a criminal assault to a little girl about four months ago and sentenced to six years' imprisonment at Folsom, was killed at the prison yesterday shortly before noon. He was working in the quarry, near the canal above the prison, where a number of convicts were engaged in hoisting large bowlders of granite by means of derricks and chain pulleys. A huge block of stone weighing about two tons was suspended in the air, and Startsman was working almost directly underneath it when the apparatus gave way and the bowlder fell on him, crushing his body in an awful manner. He lived but a few moments.
