Looking for any info for my ggg-grandfather, John McCrave (born about 1811). He was an Irish immigrant who lived in Essex County, NY until about 1852 at which time he left for California. It appears that he lived there at least until 1856, per the Search for Missing Friends article I've just found (see below). He could not read or write that I know of, so his name could be pretty badly misspelled.

If anyone could give pointers on resources for finding Gold Rush miners, that would be very helpful, too.

OF JOHN McCRAVE, who went to California, in 1852, from Clintonville, Essex county, N. Y.; when last heard from, 15 years ago, was in Placerville. Information of him will be received by his daughter, Catherine McCrave, or his son, James McCrave, Olneyville, R. I.
