A number of the Los Angeles commercial department's fishermen, or possibly
we should say potential fishermen, were out for a very pleasant boat ride
Sunday. The report comes back that a few fish were really hooked by some of
the more fortunate, however; they also report one particular member of the
party would have caught more fish had he known how to bait a hook. Better
luck next time, Charlie.

A most delightful shower was recently staged at the lovely home of Mrs. Abba
Phillips, our chief operator of Oceanside, in honor of Mrs. Anna Carter
Murphey, former chief operator of Escondido. All the long-distance
operators from Escondido, Ramona, and Oceanside were there, each meeting the
owner of the voice she had been curious about so long. After getting well
acquainted and enjoying the surprise as much as the guest of honor, we
enjoyed listening to the radio. Delicious refreshments of sandwiches, cake,
and coffee were served. Everyone voted the party such a grand success we
decided to have a chain of parties, the next one to be held in Escondido,
followed by Ramona.

Miss Martha E. Brown of Glendale was hostess at a beach party given a short
time ago. Those present were Miss Brown and her mother, Miss Lura K. Crouch,
chief operator; Miss Gertrude L. Catron, evening chief operator; Miss Clara
K. Drake, and Mrs. Anne R. Thorpe. Everyone had a hilarious evening playing
Tango. Miss Crouch was the only lucky one as she proudly carried home a can
of coffee and a jar of mayonnaise.

Mrs. Peal Pastore, p.b.x. operator in the San Diego commercial office, has
resigned, and Mrs. Marion Slee has taken her place at the switchboard.
Lawrence Sechrist and Paul McMichael have been recently added to our San
Diego commercial force. Miss Doretta Thornton has been added to the San
Diego force as an order typist. Herbert Bullock, San Diego counter salesman,
was the world's series promoter, judging from his returns. At least it
looked honest.

There were many weddings and engagements announced during the past month in
our University office, Los Angeles. The Misses Mary E. Doris and Fay M.
Stephens are wearing beautiful diamonds. Miss Hill is wearing a little band
ring, and we hear that she changed her name to Mrs. William Ellsworth during
her recent vacation. Miss Clarice M. Watts and Miss Margaret V. Mills
surprised us with their new titles of "Mrs." We extend our best wishes for
their future happiness.

Under the capable direction of the plan representatives, whose chairman is
Miss Lola M. Vinyaard, the Garfield "Go-getters" gave a most successful
informal dance recently at the Ebell Clubhouse. The purpose of the dance
was twofold; first. Garfield girls just love a good time; and second, a
piano must be paid for. The result of the affair was an increase of $90.13
in our treasury. In keeping with the usual good times, the Garfield
"Go-getters" spent the weekend at Balboa Beach. The time was spent in
dancing, boating, swimming, and eating. The result of sun on tender skin
left an impression of a day well spent.

Mrs. Ardelle F. Murphy, our Glendale supervisor, was recently transferred to
Portland, Ore., following a series of parties and luncheons given in her
honor. One of the prettiest and most delightful luncheons was given at the
Glenn Inn. The tables were beautifully decorated, and the luncheon was
delicious. She was presented with many lovely gifts. Miss Lura K. Crouch,
the chief operator, gave a toast referring to the peculiar looking slippers
worn by Mrs. Murphy while on duty. Mrs. Murphy was also the guest of honor
at a party given in Glendale office. Following a delicious supper she was
presented with a beautiful overnight bag, fitted with toilet articles. We
all hate to see her leave and hope she will come back again some day.

A bridge club has been organized by the girls in the commercial department
of the company in Pasadena. The first meeting was held at the home of Miss
Genevieve Edwards. There were two tables, and an enjoyable evening was
spent playing bridge. Mrs. Emily Winckel, the most recent bride of the
Pasadena commercial organization, was presented with the prize. Music and
refreshments were enjoyed later in the evening. The second meeting was held
at the home of Miss Louella Palmer and an enjoyable evening was spent
playing bridge. Lovely music was furnished by Mary harbor and a light
luncheon followed. Miss Dorothy Poole was the lucky one as prize winner.
The club meets twice a month, each girl taking her turn as hostess. The
members are Miss Genevieve Edwards, Miss Mary Harbor, Mrs. Jean Iwig, Miss
Isabel Leszczynski, Miss Louella Palmer, Miss Dorothy Poole, Mrs. Emile
Winckel, and Miss Helen Zaugg.

The maxim, "The old order changeth," may be well applied to Hillcrest. The
last few weeks have witnessed many changes, most important being a change in
chief operators. After nearly twelve years of service, Mrs. Eva Hawes has
decided to exchange the duties of chief operator for those of housewife. We
welcome in her place Mrs. Florence Smith, who, by her winning personality
and cheery smile, has made many friends. We are looking forward to much
enjoyment in our new cafeteria and restroom. Our new brides are Mrs.
Lawrence Leach, nee Wray, who is the recipient of a lovely bedspread from
the "B" girls and supervisor. Miss Ida K. McManus became Mrs. Feilda. Miss
Evelyn W. Wilson is now Mrs. Buttermore, who was honored by a very pretty
miscellaneous shower. Miss Dora Simpson has changed her name to Mrs. Green.
With all of the changes in our office force coming in November, and our
increasing amount of lines, Hillcrest bids fair to become one of the largest
and most interesting offices in Southern California.
