Today, Devore is not much more than maybe a dozen homes, a gas station, a
fire station, & a couple of bar / restaurants. There is an outdoor concert
venue also. A few miles south of present Devore is "Devil Canyon" which is
currently the location of a power plant, & the southern terminus of the
California Water Project. Up in the canyon, past the generating plant is
the remains of a "Civilian Conservation Corps" campground. There are many
books, & some online sources about the CCC. I don't know if any of them
mention this particular site, but I've been there. This may have been your
"labor camp".
As for camping, there is an at least seasonal stream near the present Devore
area, that people still camp & fish along. It would have been a natural
stopping point for travelers from across the desert to take a break before
continuing on.
As for an informal "labor camp" for day laborer's, farm workers etc., it
seems to me unlikely there would have been one so far from San Bernardino
and the other cities of the valley floor.
Thinking Devore might have been mentioned in a local history book, I checked
several online library catalogs. With the UC system (MELVYL) I found
nothing relevant. In the CSU San Bernardino catalog the best potential
source I found was "An introduction to Herbert S. Bailey School [and]
Verdemont Ranch for Boys / By W. William Leonard"
Verdemont Boys Ranch is still on the map.
I don't have on-line access to the San Bernardino City library which has an
excellent history room. You might hope for an area volunteer to check there
for you.

Subject: [CASANBER] Devore
Hi: I'm looking for information about a camp site that was existing close
to Devore
in the early 1930's. I've been told that it was either a camp site for
people
coming west during the depression or that it was a labor camp. My husband
was born
in Devore and we are trying to find information about his family. Thanks!
