Ron,
I was under the impression that the Mile Houses were how far they were from
city hall, but I am not 100% sure about this. I'm also not sure but there may
have been 2 5 mile houses. The city directories for 1878/79 list a Five Mile
House on west side of San Jose Road, 5 miles from City Hall. 1883-1888 the
address is "junction of Railroad Avenue and San Bruno Road". Later (1910),
the address is given as 3528 San Bruno Ave. I believe this Five Mile House
still exists today. My Five Mile house was on Mission Road. And, thanks to
everyone here, I now know Mission Road changed to Mission Street :)
