Are you sure they were _nameless_? Shaw Alley was called Sullivan Alley for
a long time -- my Sullivans used to live on the corner of that alley and
Mission Street, and it was named after them, according to one of my
ggg-aunt's obituaries. Also, the 1910 city directory refers to Shaw Alley
as "formerly Sullivan Alley."
What I'd be interested in is why the name was changed and who Shaw was.

<soapbox>There is a sad commentary on the state of the Internet, or this
list in particular -- that you feel you should have to apologize for
providing us with on-topic information. Anyone who feels annoyed about
on-topic information that isn't directly related to their needs should get
off the list, IMHO.</soapbox>
Joann
who is feeling particulary impatient with the world today ... but not with
you, Su. In fact, I just realized that now I know when the switch in names
was made. Thank you. :)
