If he died between 1856 and 1858, he would not have been buried in Colma.
Had he been moved from Laurel Hill, a record may be found. If I am correct,
Yerba Buena Cemetery was quite en vogue at the time of the death. I think
your best bet would be to check the cards from the Book of the Dead that can
be found in the Sutro Library. There I found a record of my ancestor's
death in 1850, including cemetery and plot information. You will not be
able to get a death certificate. As for an obituary, if it was written at
all, it would not be indexed unless this person may show up in the Pioneer
File. If a municipal report exists for the year in question (mine start at
1873) the Public Administrator or Coroner's reports may be helpful.
