I saw the following notice in an Oct 1850 copy of the Alta California which caught my attention:

"SUDDEN DEATH---John Mundos, a seaman on board the British barque Daniel Grant, died on Saturday morning, after twelve hours illness. Justice Shepheard held an inquest on the body: the verdict of the Jury was---"Died by the visitation of God." We have supposed that all deaths are attributable to just such a cause; but if one disease is any more "the visitation of God" than another, we should like for the intelligent Jury who sat upon poor John Mundos' body, to throw a little enlightenment upon the subject."
