Madeira exiles and sent a copy to my cousin Doug Holmes here in Sacramento.
Doug is a Pro. Gen. and works almost exclusively on the Azores Islands
researh. I hope his reply is of help to you.

Hi Helen,
These Portuguese from Madeira to the midwest are known as Madeira exiles and
were Protestant (newly converted) and exiled. The people doing that research
should take a look at my LINKS page and find the link to a group known as
the Madeira Exiles headed by Deb Kleber. I think they will find some links
to others that way.
