Archiving is pertinent.

Have you visited the archives of this mailing list to see what's gone on
before the year 2001?

How about visiting the archives of the mailing list, year 1998, and doing a
search of the surname you're interested in from the SF region, and you find
a message from Joe Blow and he's also searching the same line that you are
and he's shared some of the information he has, including death certificate
transcriptions. Wouldn't you be thrilled?

But the SSDI from rootsweb.com wasn't on line then with postems so he
couldn't leave his message there at that time and he hasn't gotten around to
leaving it there yet because he's off researching another line - so you'd
never know that he had this information or who he was unless he's also on
that surname list and an active member or he's posted his Gedcom on line
somewhere. New researchers probably start with the SSDI and CADI now and
can find the information. But two years ago those resources didn't exist as
they do now and more than likely Joe Blow was working through state wide
mailing lists or county mailing lists for information and sharing that way.

Someone was being very concientious about sharing the information for the
widest possible audience to find at a later date.

It's just another way of sharing data for others to find - the subject line
should tell you whether you wan to read it, if not you can just delete it.
But it's in the archives for others to find.
