Check out this site http://sanborn.umi.com/sanborn/image/fetchimage?state=ca&reelid=reel54&lcid=813&imagename=00020&width=1229&crop=50,69-724,1013 it is the 1100 block of Montgomery from the 1886-1893 Sanborn Maps.
George Cathie,
The best way is to check the Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps which show the
outline of buildings and often include information about them. I checked
the 1886 & 1887 maps, but that side of the street wasn't included (lazy
bums! :) It may be in a later edition though (of course pre-1906).
If it is a boarding house, then a check of the "yellow" pages of a City
Directory might list one.
Hope this helps,
Ron
