I'm trying to find out about St. Rose's Church. My
great grandparents were married there in SF in 1883.
Anyone know anything about this church?
Also, my great grandfather was an bottler in a liquor
manufacturer in SF in the late 1890's into the 1910's.
Probably a silly request since SF during that time was
known for its drinking and "debauchery", but anyone
know any names of possible liquor manufacturer's
during that time? (I'm sure there were lots of them!)
Information regarding "Liquors" can be found in the back section of most
old City
Directories. There were no "yellow" pages then, but all had a "business"
section after the
regular listings of residents. Many folks ran small neighborhood bars
on their premises
(residential), and they are also listed. Many times the place of
occupation was listed after
the person's name in the residential section. Sometimes just the
occupation.
I don't know where you are, but microfilms of the city directories are
available at the
California State Libraries.
Directories have also been filmed by the LDS Church and are available
for viewing at local
Family History Centers. There is a fee to rent each roll, about $3.50.
Here is a sample list
with the film order numbers. They also have directories for earlier and
later dates. They can
be found by searching at:
http://www.familysearch.org/
When the page comes up click on "Library" on the bar near the top. When
the library page
comes up, click on "family History Library Catalog on the bar near the
top. This will get you
to a place where you can do a search for "San Francisco" part of
"California". It will then list
what is available on film for SF. The folks at the Family History
Centers can help too, when
you go there to order. The folks at the centers are very helpful.
You do not have to be a member of the church to use their libraries.
Microfilms of Catholic Marriages and Baptisms are at the Catholic
Archives at St. Patrick's
Seminary in Menlo Park.

For hours See note from Archivist below:
"We are open M-W-F from 10:00am to 4PM.
Genealogists need an appointment.
We do have materials for the 1850s, but the two oldest
parishes lost their records in the 1906 Fire."
I don't know which churches were lost-St Patrick's in San Francisco on
Mission was one of them.
You have to go to the Archives in person to look at the films. They do
not have anyone to do
"lookups" for you. Last time I was there the microfilm printer was
broken, with no plans to
fix it. So you would have to bring a digital camera to photograph the
film on the viewer
platform.
I hope this is helpful. I have found out lots about my grandparents
this way.
