I need some help, but first what I know, and where I am going to check next, them where should I.
The facts:
1) a Rebecca Eastland, aged 75 died in Oakland, Nov. 17, 1896.
2) She was born in Nashville, Tenn.,
3) She was at one time owned by Thomas Eastland, who came to California, in 1849, with his son Joseph. They came from Texas, by way of Mexico, to the Pacific Coast, and them by ship to San Francisco, it looks like they had to male slaves with them, one a man how old I do not know, and young boy, best guest 10-12 years old.
4) Thomas, and his son started a company called Eastland and Son.
5) Thomas, then when to the Gold Country, bought and sold land in Oro, on Bear River, and then mining claims at Chinese Camp, Indian Gulch and elsewhere, he then when back to Washington D.C., to try to get a federal job, in San Francisco.
6) Came back with some more of his family and Rebecca, (when not sure)
7) Joseph, meantime, when to work for the Donahue's Union Iron and Brass Foundry, later the known as the Union Iron Works.
8) In 1865, started the Oakland Gas Works, later known as the Oakland, Gas, Light and Heat Company.
9) He died Nov. 23, 1895, in Mill Valley, which he help to start.
How where I am going to started:
1) Check the early San Francisco City Directories, to see when Thomas came back, and what he did.
2) Obits, to see what they tell me.
3) Censuses to see what they tell.
So what else can I do.
George
