Subject: [CASANFRA] Partial Transcription for 1870 census for the 4th Ward of San Francisco County...
Date: Tue, 25 Mar 2003 17:43:54 -0800
I have now completed transcribing the first 216 pages (out of 421 pages)
for the 4th Ward in the 1870 Census for San Francisco County, CA and
have it online. This Enumeration District (ED=42) is the largest ED in
the 1870 San Francisco Federal Census (made up of EDs 39-57).
This completes the first half (50%) of the 4th Ward.
The 4th ward was in the 42th Enumeration District in 1870. It is my
hope that it will help a lot of people.
I believe from 'http://americahurrah.com/SanFrancisco/VotingWards.htm'
that the 4th Ward was likely located in an area bounded by in the (N) by
Vallejo St., the (E) by Kearney St, the (S) by Washington St., and the
(W) by Larkin St. I believe that at least part of this part of San
Francisco was distroyed in 1906 in the aftermath of the Great Quake of
1906 by the fire that distroyed much of San Francisco.
I am continuing with the transcribing of the 4th Ward and after it is
completed in a few months, I will continue on with the 5th Ward thru the
12th Ward. This will likely take many months to complete, but I will
periodically inform as to its status. As can be imagined, this is going
to be quite a task, but will be worth it to me, knowing so many will be
helped.

Sincerely,
Edward A. Black, Sr. (a native of Alameda County, born in Oakland)
